Observations

  • My followers like photos and photo essays/collages
  • My Nightstand feature continuously has a small following (not just this month), but it’s one of my favorites, so it stays (plus it’s a good way to track what I read)
  • Sometimes my worst photos have the best stories
  • Not many people read blogs (or post on blogs) during the four-day Thanksgiving weekend

Seven Down

November 29, 2013 § 4 Comments

I’ve noted several times that I injured my ankle/calf/Achilles tendon in the spring, blowing a chance to successfully complete my running challenge of 13 races in 2013. I took more than three months off from running, slowly starting back in September. With only six races completed through May, there’s really no chance I’ll run another seven before December 31.

However, before preparing the Thanksgiving meal yesterday, I rose early and ran my first race since May, the inaugural Turkey Trot in downtown St. Paul along the Mississippi River (just the 5K).

I had a great race. No problems with pain. Dad came to cheer me on, standing out in the cold from start to finish. And remarkably, my time was one of my best ever. So I guess I’m doing okay, though I still have some problems with irritation when I don’t run. Strange.

The 5K facts:

  • Time: 26:56 (8:41 pace)
  • Overall place: 307/2473
  • Female: 110/unknown
  • Division (F40-49): 16/289

Thanksgiving leftovers and the descent into mayhem

Other Than That, It Was a Fine Day

November 28, 2013 § 6 Comments

A banner day, Thanksgiving was.

I ran a great race — my first since spring, post-injury.

The meal I feared ruining turned out way better than planned.

I was surrounded by lovely people — family, friends, children. I even chatted with a few dogs.

The only bad thing? I learned Saul Leiter, one of my favorite photographers, died the other day. I had clung to the hope that I’d bump into him on the Lower East Side one day, ask him a question or two, then leave him be.

Now I’m left to wonder what will happen to the disorganized photographs, drawings, paintings, and treasures that fill his NYC apartment.

A good race morning

Gobble Tov

November 27, 2013 § 4 Comments

I believe the Thanksgiving meal I’m preparing is kosher (no meat, so no worries about mixing it with milk, wine, or grape juice), so I clearly have Hanukkah and Thanksgiving under control. Considering I’m not Jewish, I’m pretty pleased with myself.

I’m also exhausted. Below is a run down of my day today and the expected chaos tomorrow. All good. All worth it.
