Happy Birthday, Dad! Merry New Year, everyone! Don’t play with fire, people…

Fast Eddie’s Big Day

December 31, 2012 § Leave a comment

It’s Dad’s seventieth birthday today. Every year he gets short changed because we choose to avoid the New Year’s Eve revelers and the exotic menus at hard-to-get-into restaurants. But we always manage to celebrate it in a way that makes him happy, or so he says. Today I’m making him fish cooked in cream, mushrooms, and vermouth. And we’ll eat a cake with seventy candles on top and sing “Happy Birthday” without paying royalties. Then we’ll give him his big present and welcome in the new year as we look forward to our next seventy years with him.

For those of you lucky to know him, you’ll agree that he (“Skip” to his friends and family, “Fast Eddie” to the students who couldn’t keep up with his mad writing skills on the chalkboard) is one of the kindest, most humble, patient, nonjudgmental, generous, and helpful people you could ever hope to meet. He weaves a great tale, was a remarkable teacher (still is), bakes the best blueberry muffins this side of Minnesota (nay, the U.S., nay the world!), fixes anything, never complains and never ails, is the “Norm” of L&M Supply in Hibbing, never has an unkind word about anyone, and always laughs readily at shows he’s listened to for decades: Car Talk and Prairie Home Companion.

He’s quite lovable. I love him. Everyone who knows him does.

Happy Birthday, Dad! Hope I age as well as you.

2012 in Review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 7,300 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 12 years to get that many views.

Click here to see the complete report.
