One of my running groups offered a hill workout tonight. Because of the heat and humidity, I almost opted for the regular run most people were doing. However, I’m one of those odd giraffes who actually likes running up hills, so I went with the big boys.

I’m certainly not fast — the two guys I was with easily passed me each round — but the challenge to sprint up a steep hill over and over again is blissful torture. I usually want to stop while I’m in the midst of it (wheezing is a common theme), but I love arriving at the top.

My mind generally tends to wander when I run, but tonight I just focused. On my breathing, going faster, making it up the hill, not stopping. Mostly I just savored the opportunity to be running with new acquaintances up and down the long, steep Lexington grade, then gently jogging homeward.

Where Am I?
